BMI formula

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared:

BMI = weight ÷ (height × height)

For example, a person weighing 70 kg and measuring 1.75 m has a BMI of about 22.9. The result is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.

Understanding BMI

BMI can be used as one general indicator when discussing body weight, but it does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, fitness, or overall health. Interpretation can also differ by age, sex, pregnancy status, and other factors.
