How to Calculate Freelance Take-Home Pay
Take-home pay is easier to plan when you separate business revenue, business costs and money reserved for taxes.
Start with monthly revenue
Use a realistic average of the money your freelance business expects to receive. If revenue changes substantially from month to month, use a conservative planning figure rather than a particularly strong month.
Subtract business expenses
Subtract recurring and expected business costs such as software, contractors, marketing, supplies, travel and payment fees. Your result is a planning estimate of profit before your personal tax reserve.
Set aside a tax reserve
Choose a reserve percentage that fits your own circumstances and local tax planning. Multiply the estimated profit by that percentage to calculate the amount to set aside.
Estimate take-home pay
A simple planning formula is: revenue − business expenses − tax reserve = estimated take-home pay. This is a budgeting model, not a tax calculation.
Review the estimate regularly
Update the numbers when revenue, expenses or your tax-planning assumptions change. A monthly review can help prevent a strong revenue month from being mistaken for sustainable personal income.
