JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?

Understand the difference between JPG and PNG and learn which format is better for photos, screenshots, logos, transparency, and web images.

JPG is usually best for photos

JPG uses lossy compression and is often much smaller for photographs and other images with many colors and gradients.

PNG is useful for graphics

PNG preserves sharp edges and supports transparency, making it useful for logos, icons, screenshots, and illustrations.

When to convert

Convert JPG to PNG when you need a PNG workflow, transparency support, or a lossless format for editing. Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail already lost in the JPG.

For the web

Choose the format based on the image rather than using one format for everything. Smaller files can improve loading performance, while the right format protects visual quality.
