What is PDF optimization?
PDF optimization means rewriting parts of a PDF so its internal structure can be stored more efficiently. Depending on how the original document was created, this can sometimes reduce the final file size.
Optimization is different from simply merging PDFs. Merging combines pages into one document, while optimization focuses on rewriting the resulting PDF structure.
How to optimize a PDF online
- Open the ToolAlto PDF Optimizer.
- Select the PDF you want to process.
- Click Optimize PDF.
- Compare the original and resulting file sizes shown by the tool.
- Download the optimized PDF if the result is suitable.
Will optimization always make a PDF smaller?
No. A PDF that is already compact may change very little, and the resulting file can occasionally be larger. A useful optimizer should report the actual result instead of promising a fixed percentage reduction.
What about image-heavy PDFs?
Scanned documents and image-heavy PDFs can be large because they contain many image bytes. Rewriting PDF structure may not remove much of that image data. If you need major image compression, that is a different operation from basic PDF optimization.
Should you optimize after merging PDFs?

How to check an optimized PDF
- Open the downloaded file in a PDF viewer.
- Check the first, middle, and last pages.
- Confirm that text, images, tables, and forms appear correctly.
- Compare the final file size with the original.
- Keep the original until you are satisfied with the result.
