How to Calculate a Freelance Project Deposit

A project deposit is an upfront payment agreed before or at the start of a project. A simple calculation is useful when you want to turn a percentage into a clear amount for a proposal, invoice, or payment schedule.

The basic approach

Deposit = Project price × Deposit percentage. For example, a $4,000 project with a 30% deposit has a $1,200 deposit. The remaining balance is $2,800.

Practical considerations

Choose the percentage from your actual agreement rather than treating a generic percentage as a rule. State when the deposit is due, what it covers, how later payments are scheduled, and what your agreement says about cancellations or refunds. The percentage alone does not define the legal or commercial terms.
